Got Google? HMS Upgrades Technology With Grant

A good teacher will work to make the most of the resources he or she has. A great teacher will work to create additional resources. Burrell School District is fortunate to have great teachers like Shaun Reddick.

Working with assistant principal Ken Pruitt, Mr. Reddick recently spearheaded an online fundraising campaign on DonorsChoose.org that resulted in the purchase of 25 new Google Chromebooks for his Huston Middle School science classroom.

The new Chromebooks, which arrived in late January, were purchased through generous donations by Burrell parents, community members, and businesses. “The word got out through Edline and district e-mails, and then the whole community came together to make the project a success,” says Mr. Reddick.

The campaign raised a total of approximately $3,000 including matching donations from DonorsChoose.org – a national website that provides an online platform that connects educators’ requests with donor support.

According to Mr. Reddick, Google Chromebooks are basically “lightning-quick Internet machines.” He says that having the additional technology supplements the regular classroom laptops, and opens up opportunities for his students to do more virtual labs, research, and other projects in-class. He also says that students benefit from working through Google Drive applications because it gives them a “different perspective” in terms of how to create, access, and share documents in a web-based environment.
