HMS Students Journey to the World of Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss has created a fantastic and magical world, and students at Huston Middle School had the lucky chance to delve deeper into this universe with their production of Seussical Jr. last month.

The show, which was held on February 7, 8, and 9, combined tales and characters from the books “Horton Hears a Who,” “The One Feathered Tale of Ms. Gertrude McFuzz,” “McElligott’s Pool,” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!”. Students took on roles ranging from the animals of the Jungle of Nool to the citizens of Whoville.

Needless to say, the show was a complete sellout all three nights, with all 500-plus seats in the Charles A. Huston Middle School auditorium filled with eager audience members. In all, 107 students were involved in the production — 42 cast members and 65 crew members. Guiding their efforts was Kaylyn Scheller, a teacher at the school.

“There’s not a single cast member in our production that didn’t put their whole heart into this show,” said Scheller.

The actors and dancers rehearsed relentlessly three days or more a week for over three months, while the crew met every Saturday to build, design, and install set pieces. There was also a separate team for costuming and makeup that met every other week to plan and craft various props for the actors.
“The students have a hand in every part of the show,” said Scheller. “All set pieces are worked on by students and their families. Even our spotlights, light board, and stage crew are led by students in leadership roles.”

However, the show was not without hurdles. The week before the show, Burrell had three canceled school days because of extreme cold, causing a bit of tension among the cast and crew. However, with the help of the staff, administration, and parents, everything was able to come together.

No matter the turnout due to weather, Scheller believes the show would still have been a success.
“The impact this performance made on the students, and their relationships, pride, and happiness during the entire process makes Seussical Jr. a complete and utter success in my book,” said Scheller.
