HMS Students Participate in ‘Day of Caring’

Last month, Huston Middle School students gave a whole new meaning to spring cleaning. Together with teachers and staff, middle school students participated in a “Day of Caring” by cleaning and sprucing up the school grounds of Bon Air Elementary, Huston Middle School, and Burrell High School.

Students were divided into teams, and each team was assigned to a location. Some teams edged, mulched, and planted flowers around the schools, while others built and painted picnic tables that will be used in Huston Middle School’s outdoor garden classroom. One student-lead team even painted motivational signs in the hallways of the middle school.

“The goal was to teach students how to give back to and show pride in the school community that has provided so much for us,” says Huston Middle School Assistant Principal and Day of Caring Organizer, Mrs. Autumn Turk.

Back in April, Burrell High School students also participated in a Day of Caring, which involved similar volunteer work at Kotecki Park and Burrell Lake Park.

In addition to learning the importance of giving back to the community, the Huston Middle School Day of Caring helped middle school students to develop new skills and foster great teamwork and leadership abilities.

“The students worked hard individually and as a team, learned new skills, and showed pride in their work,” says Turk. “Some of the students and staff even offered to continue working after the scheduled time to finish the projects from the morning! We are hoping that this becomes an annual tradition so that we may continue to serve our schools and community.”
