Tradition of Excellence Continues

As educators and coaches here at Burrell, we take great pride in the academic, athletic, and artistic achievements of our talented students. Continuing a tradition of excellence in diverse areas, we are pleased to be able to share with parents and the community the accomplishments of our students.

BHS Senior Earns Eastern Choral Honor

Senior Marina Lagattuta represented Burrell School District last April as a member of the Treble Voice Chorus at the All-East Music Educators Conference. The conference, held in Providence, Rhode Island, was a three-day event aimed at promoting music studies. Ms. Lagattuta’s high audition rankings at the District, Region, and State levels qualified her to participate, making her one of only three students in the district to have attended the conference in the past 25 years.

Science Olympiad

Thirty Huston Middle School students in grades 6-8 and three ninth-graders are preparing to compete in the Science Olympiad at California University of Pennsylvania on March 16th. For the past eight years, Burrell students have qualified to move on to the State competition, which takes place at Juniata College in April.

Coached by Mr. Reddick and Mr. Campbell—a team who has been working together for over 20 years—Burrell students are well equipped to excel. The Science Olympiad is structured much like an athletic event, combining a wide range of disciplines and promoting teamwork. As such, the Olympiad encourages students with diverse interests to work together to succeed.

BSD Competes in Team America Rocketry Challenge

Led by two-time World SpaceModeling Championships (WSMC) participant Rod Schafer, it’s no wonder the district’s rocketry program is out of this world. Schafer, who started the program at Huston Middle School in 2004 while working in maintenance there, has been a member of the National Association of Rocketry for 32 years, has attended 20 National NARAM meets, holds a 2006 National Title, and has competed in Serbia and Slovakia at the 18th and 19th WSMC.

Burrell’s rocketry program is now in its 12th year and has never missed a Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC), a national event that engages over 4,000 students. Burrell middle and high school teams have attended four TARC National Finals, competing against the best teams in the country. This year’s team is hoping to qualify for their fifth National competition.

Sports Roundup

Burrell’s athletic achievements this year, both by teams and individual athletes, certainly perpetuate the district’s tradition of excellence. The girls basketball team ended their season with a WPIAL section win and a deep run in the WPIAL and PIAA playoffs, and forward Natalie Myers accepted a scholarship to play basketball at Youngstown State.

The wrestling team also had great success this year, winning their 13th consecutive WPIAL section as well as their 10th straight WPIAL AA Title.  Damon Greenwald became the 8th Burrell HS state title-holder, bringing home the PIAA 152lb Gold!

In football, the team was able to improve their record from 0-9 to 4-5 this season, and numerous swimmers have qualified to compete at WPIALs as well.
